You might me asking yourself "What the heck is this contraption?" and is Amber drunk? While I do enjoy getting slightly tipsyfied while cooking, I am not now. My new Japanese slicer's instruction pamphlet translation will elicit a few giggles.
This slicer is the MOST AWESOME piece of kitchen gadgetry I've come across in a long while. Let me begin by saying that I am a "Slaw Lover"- coleslaw, carrot slaw, cucumber slaw, slaw on burgers, slaw on hotdogs, slaw on fish tacos...ever look at a word long enough that it starts seeming weird? Slaw, slaw, slaw....
My quest for an appliance that made gorgeous vegetable ribbons for mounds of SLAW ended when I found this beauty. I was eating in a local downtown Savannah restaurant "Skylers" who by the way has the BEST teriyaki chicken dish I've ever eaten. The chicken is so crispy and the glaze so perfect, I think they put an addictive chemical in it that makes me crave it fortnightly....(what movie is that quote from?)Back to the appliance...this restaurant has a coleslaw in which the cabbage is finely shredded in long noodle-like ribbons which holds the dressing "just so" and the cabbage is very tender due to the texture of the shred. I HAD to find the appliance that was able to work this MAGIC on vegetables. I did A LOT of research looking for this baby. For the money, this spiral vegetable slicer is the best!
The benefits of eating the "peel" of some fruits and vegetables are great, however it's tough to get your kiddos to agree to it. This slicer takes the peel to a more manageable mouthful so your kids get the great benefits.
I ordered it from Amazon which had the best price around. I found one on Ebay but there was a ton of bids on it and there were still 4 more days to go so it would have cost around the same if I would have purchased it new from Amazon.
I have been shredding carrots all weekend!! I've made my favorite Thai Carrot Salad (I'll post the recipe soon) twice (the new carrot slices made it even better, if that is possible). I can't wait to shred cucumbers and cabbage also. Three different blades come with the slicer: fine, medium, and coarse. The carrots do well with the fine blade. The onion with the coarse. Just look at this beautiful fluffy carrot! This is only 2 carrots! My 6 year old has been eating this like crazy all weekend. The strands are actually fun to eat and so very tender. However I wouldn't give it to a small child due to choking hazards with the longer strands.
Did you know that most of an apples cancer-fighting agents are located in the peel? How many of your children want you to peel their apple? With this slicer, my children eat the peel without ever really knowing it. Just core your apple and put the whole apple on the slicer and you get these yummy thin slices with the peel attached. I should be a salesperson for this gadget!
Squash by gosh!
Sliced with the solid blade, not the noodle fine blade.
This one continuous strand of carrot was about 6 feet long!
In the true words of the instruction manual:
"Helps your cooking fast, joyfully with wonderfully edged strings!"
